Thursdays are the days that typically fail to be great days for me...
Simply because I always seem to think it's Friday, and it never is.
But yesterday, Thursday was filled with wonderful events, including an email congratulating me on receiving an RA position for next year, a shorter class time because absolutely no one had questions, AND, the best part of all, I met Za.
When I first walked up to Asheville Middle School office, I was eager to get in, and meet the young lady I would be mentoring for the remainder of my Freshman year. I walked to the front doors, utterly confused about how to get in because apparently you have to ring a door bell to be buzzed in (is this prison?)... I was taken back by the safety provided by this feature- made me rethink my middle school days.
Once I was in the office, I met with Lindsay, the Volunteer Coordinator, and checked in, grabbed my mentor badge and set off on a tour of the rather large school. Much like UNCA, I found myself walking up and down stairs, and around in circles- almost a comforting characteristic.
We walked up stairs, and turned a corner to find Za hanging out by an office door (where we will be meeting on a weekly basis).
The first thing I remember thinking was; She is beautiful.
Her choice of expressive clothing, beautifully straightened hair, and make-up less face made me vividly remember my 8th grade year and the struggles I faced... The way I carried myself.
Right off the bat, she made me proud.
For the forty-five minutes, I got to know a outer surface of Azaelea. She directed me around the school, talked about her family, what she was interested in... And even asked me if I had any questions for her.
Her maturity to allow me into her life, on a weekly basis, was admirable.
When I left Asheville Middle, I felt an overwhelming sense of happiness.
I was overjoyed to know that for the coming weeks, I will be impacting Za's week- I will be hearing "what's up", and asking "how are you doing?"
This Thursday, Za and I will be doing some crafts because we found that we both enjoy art! We also planned a weekly selfie challenge where we both agreed to take selfies during the week and when we get back together we are going to talk about things we love in our pictures, and things that make us uncomfortable. I am hoping that by the end of our selfie challenges, Za will allow me to photograph her, give her some photos to share with family, and realize the potential and beauty she possesses and will always have!
Until then.
Xo.
